Savudrija
Situated on the coast north of Umag as one of the most projecting points into the sea, Savudrija is a tourist resort famed for its lovely beaches and campsites, as well as tourist village Pineta. The highlight of this town is its famous lighthouse, the oldest one in Istria, built in 1818 with a height of 36 meters.
One of the specific features of its long fishing tradition is the unusual, and for Istria completely untypical way of storing boats. Boats that are hung up high on specially prepared wooden stands are an exceptional visual attraction.
According to legend, Savudrija (Salvore) derives its name from Otto, the son of Barbarossa, king of Germany, who after a naval battle in 1177 tried to find shelter in a cistern. “Salvo re” (king’s salvation) became the toponym Salvore, later Savudrija.
